Roller screen
1. Definition
A roller screen (also called roll grizzly / shaft screen) is a screening machine made of multiple parallel rotating shafts fitted with discs or toothed discs. Material fed onto the slightly inclined roller deck is conveyed forward by shaft rotation and gravity: particles smaller than the gaps between rollers fall through as undersize, while larger particles keep moving along the deck and discharge at the end as oversize — screening and conveying happen simultaneously.
2. Structure & Working Principle
Main structure: frame (screen casing), multiple roller shafts, discs/toothed discs, drive unit (motor + reducer, with chain or gear transmission), feed inlet, undersize outlet, oversize outlet.
Working flow: Feeding → Conveying on rollers → Fines passing through → Oversize discharging
- Feeding: material is evenly fed from the inlet onto the inclined roller deck;
- Conveying: all shafts rotate in the same direction; material moves toward the discharge end by roller friction and the deck slope;
- Passing through: fines drop between the rollers into the undersize hopper below while moving along;
- Discharging: coarse lumps roll along the deck and leave through the oversize outlet at the end.
3. Classification
By roller face:
- Disc type: plain discs on the shafts, uniform gaps; for general size classification;
- Toothed-disc type: toothed discs on the shafts; better at breaking arches and handling wet, sticky materials.
By drive:
- Centralized drive: one motor drives all shafts through chains/gears;
- Grouped drive: multiple motors drive the shaft groups separately.
By installation: stationary (most common); mobile (for temporary or relocatable duty).

5. Advantages & Limitations
Advantages:
- High throughput, ideal for large-flow bulk pre-screening;
- Resistant to blinding — handles wet, sticky, mud-containing materials well;
- Smooth operation, low noise, less dust;
- Screening and conveying in one unit; compact and easy to integrate into a system.
Limitations:
- More complex structure and higher cost;
- Gap size is fixed; changing the cut point requires replacing discs;
- Rollers (discs/toothed discs) wear relatively fast; more maintenance;
- Limited separation accuracy — not for fine classification;
- Efficiency drops for very fine material (e.g., below ~10 mm).
6. Typical Applications
Coal handling systems of thermal power plants (raw coal, coal gangue pre-screening), coal preparation plants, coking plants (coke screening), metallurgy (sinter, pellets), building materials (limestone), and mines (ore pre-screening) — large-particle, large-flow bulk screening duties.
